Introducing the New Guidebook for Jake and His Shame Armour

We’re really excited to share that the new accompanying guidebook to Jake and His Shame Armour is now available.

Written by myself and Lisa, the guidebook has been created to support therapists, parents, carers, and educators in exploring the themes within Jake’s story in a deeper and more practical way.

When I first wrote Jake and His Shame Armour, it was with the hope of helping children, families, and professionals find a way to talk about difficult feelings – especially shame – in a way that felt safe and relatable. Shame can be such a hidden emotion. It often sits beneath anger, withdrawal, or the feeling of “not being good enough.” For many children who have experienced trauma, loss, or attachment injuries, shame can become a heavy suit of armour that keeps them safe, but also keeps others at a distance.

Over time, therapists, parents, and educators began using Jake’s story in creative and powerful ways. The conversations that followed made it clear that there was a need for something more structured to support this work – a resource that could guide adults in using the story therapeutically and with confidence.

The new guidebook has been developed to do just that. It offers:

  • A deeper look at the themes of shame and attachment explored in Jake’s story

  • Practical exercises and reflective questions for children and adults to use together

  • Guidance on how to help young people notice, name, and soften their “armour”

  • Ideas for creative and play-based exploration, suitable for both therapy and home settings

The aim is to make these conversations about shame and self-protection more accessible, grounded, and developmentally sensitive. It’s a resource designed to help children build understanding and compassion for themselves, and to help adults feel equipped to walk alongside them.

At its heart, the guidebook is about connection,  helping young people feel seen, supported, and safe enough to begin setting their armour down.
